News - Avian Influenza
Dorest January 2008. The H5N1 strain Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) was confirmed in
three dead swans at the Swannery Abbotsbury, Dorest. Wild bird control and surveillance zones were
established. Do regularly check the defra link below for the latest news.
Suffolk February 2007. The outbreak of disease in East Anglia is bound to have long term
ramifications for our industry. It is essential that you carry out another risk assessment. Members of the practice can download these from the exclusive page. If you are not a member, please e-mail us at
dalton@gameconsultancy.fsnet.co.uk to request a copy. We can only respond to these requests by email.
Pay particular attention to drinkers and feeders, as contamination of these by droppings
carrying the virus is believed to be the most likely route for infection in our species. You should plan to
ensure that, at the very least, drinkers, especially in and around the release pen are covered in such a
way as to protect then from faecal contamination.
What next? The disease is likely to continue to haunt us for the foreseeable future, so we must
remain alert to the potential risks and what we can do to minimise them. Visit the Defra website
www.defra.gov.uk and click the avian influenza link to keep yourself up to date.
